Christine Masal

Christine Masal was born and grew up in Murnau, a village in Bavaria.

At the beginning of this century this picturesqeue small town was the sphere of action of important painters like Kandinsky and Münter. These artists, members of the legendary circle of artists „Blaue Reiter“, created here an art movement which later became known as „Classic Abstract Painting“.

Guided by her parents Christine Masal was introduced to painting early in life. She was able to work and experiment with a range of different painting and presentation techniques for about 10 years. Seven years ago Ms. Masal choose to work solely with classic oil colours.

Although Ms. Masal took part in various studio seminars of the „Kunstakademie Munich“ she describes herself an „Autodidact Artist“. With this she wants to express her disagreement with the formal art education and in particular in painting. She believes that instead of allowing the students to explore and develop their own individual creativity and talent they are influenced by their professors and tend to follow their preferred style.

The „Blaue Reiter“ theories about colour and harmony have influenced her work and Ms. Masal produces an excellent synthesis of brilliant colours and motifs with traditional arts techniques. For instance „Lustiges Treiben“or „Rot-blaue Ringe“,  a workout of Kandinsky’s „Komposition Landschaft“, shows her delight to practise the style of the „Classic Abstract Painting“.

Her paintings show a joy for the human life. Some symbols used such as magic, ritual, fertility, evolution of life as well as non-conflict development are not simply depicted but rather reworked and expressed creatively. It is almost unbelievable that all paintings are done in closed rooms and never outside in nature.

Daily Living in the studio

Today Ms. Masal works in her atelier on Kos Island.

Nowadays, while she is concentrating on developing further her ideas and style, she welcomes opportunities to discuss her works with people interested in art.

She held an exhibition for the first time in Greece, on invitation of Kos City during the cultural festival „Hippokratia 98“.

To make her oil paintings popular beyond the art scene she produces high quality posters from various original paintings. More projects aimed at „freeing“ art from the elitaire art circles are beeing planned for the future.

For instance, for the first time Christine Masal breaks the boring technical design of software packagings. She provided one of her paintings as a cover for a computer program thus making art accessible to techncians and non-art enthusiasic and bringing to them the joy of life.
